Istanbul Rail System Station

Metro Station Designed with Biophilic and Sustainable Architecture

The Istanbul Rail System Station is a metro station designed by Yuksel Proje R&D and Design Center, inspired by nature and incorporating biophilic and sustainable architecture principles.

The Istanbul Rail System Phase 1 metro line connects the National Garden and the Belgrade Forests in Istanbul, creating a green corridor between these two green cores of the city. The station design aims to reflect the images of nature and provide a biophilic and sustainable architectural experience.

One of the unique features of this design is the visual connection with nature. The station incorporates a skylight and a green wall, allowing natural light and fresh air to enter the station. The skylight is equipped with sensors to measure the indoor air quality, ensuring a comfortable environment for passengers. Additionally, the skylight is fitted with PV panels to generate sustainable energy for the station.

The design also pays attention to the use of biomorphic forms. The column design abstracts the form of a tree, creating an emphasis point where crowds can gather. The materials used in the station are EPD certified, ensuring their sustainability and environmental friendliness.

The realization of this design was made possible through the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology. BIM allowed the integration of 10 disciplines, including architecture, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and infrastructure, ensuring efficient coordination and decision-making. Virtual reality tools were also utilized to make architectural decisions and visualize the station's details.

The Istanbul Rail System Station is part of the Phase 1 Metro Line, which aims to provide fast access between Sefakoy and Basaksehir on the European side of Istanbul. The line will also be connected to existing metro lines within the city. The project was completed in three months, thanks to the efficient implementation of BIM technology.

This design showcases the successful integration of biophilic and sustainable architecture in a metro station, creating a harmonious connection between the underground space and the natural environment. It has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in the Engineering, Construction, and Infrastructure Design category.
